Rookie Walkley storms to Matchams victory

April 17, 2008

Hello everyone...lots has been happening since my last update so here we go.

I had my first big meeting on the team green KX125, at round one of the BYMX at Desertmartin!

After hours and hours of travelling we finally arrived but it was great to see everyone so I soon forgot about it all.

Race day fast approached and I must admit I was a little bit nervous, mostly worried about the qualifying sessions as the open group has a lot of top quality experienced riders but I qualified ok and would have done so which ever group I had been placed in so I was well chuffed, I think the track walk with Mark Hucklebridge helped a lot.

Alex Brawn my team green manager and Mark both came and had a chat to me before my first race and I was told just to relax and enjoy it, easier said than done but once the gate dropped the nerves went. I have a slight disadvantage on the starts but went onto have 15th, everyone seemed pleased with that but I think I could have done better.

On day two and the heavens opened but I still got to race - the Academy boys were up early to walk the track and Mark told us lots of different lines all of which I think I used in the race. By the time I was on the line the track was soaking but I really enjoyed it, I went on to have 13th in that race but again I think it was my start that let me down?

I finished in 10th overall and went home with the "Rookie of the weekend" award, which was a Kawasaki jacket and a bottle of plonk which my mam enjoyed.

The weekend just gone I had my second national meeting but this time with the BSMA at Matchams all groups were full so it looked like it was going to be a good weekend. The track was good if not a bit dry for the first race so the rain we had on and off during the day helped the track. My Dad had done a little bit of tweaking to my bike, jetting and a different exhaust, it worked I had a good starts and the KX felt great.

I really enjoyed the weekend; the rain didn’t stop any racing so we had the full five blocks. I went on to win overall.

I’d just like to say a big thanks to Alex Brawn from Kawasaki Team Green and Mark Hucklebridge for all the help and support they gave me at Desertmartin and huge thanks to all my other sponsors.
