HIGH FIVES - Andrew Gillett

July 18, 2008

We managed to track down Andrew Gillett the kid from Wales taking the Remedies Bar championship by storm – so what did he have to say?

MOTO: You live in Wales but travel down to compete in the Remedies Bar Championships. Can you explain why you do this and are there any local championships in which you take part in?
“There’s a couple of local championships that go on around where I live, but I travel down to the Remedies Bar Championships because I feel the competition there is of a higher standard with the calibre of riders that take part in the championship. I enjoy the championship and also enjoy the tracks that are within the series.”

MOTO: Last season whilst you were racing in the British Open championship round at Pontralas you had an unfortunate accident. Can you explain what happened please, and the implications it had?
“It was during the first race; I had gained the holeshot and was feeling confident with my speed. Whilst I was in 5th place I was going up the hill into the left hander when I came of the bike and went into the chest nut fencing. As a result I broke my tib and fib. Up until this accident I was lying around 12th in the championship all together and was leading the Remedies Bar Championship Open class. As I result I slipped down the order in both championships. I then had to sit out the remainder of the season and had to miss the opening rounds of both championships this year to enable my leg to gain full strength.”

MOTO: Can you explain the setup you have, and what you will be running next year?
“This season I am riding a bog standard 450f Honda. I have sponsorship from Paul Green Tyres, in which he helps me out with kits, helmets, boots and oils. He also gives me discount on tyres. Next year I’m not to sure but I will be competing in the full campaign of the Maxxis British Championship as well as the KWS Masters series.”

MOTO: Out of all the races you have taken part in are there any that stand out for certain reasons?
“Out of all the races I have taken part in three main races stand out for certain reasons and these are:
• In 2006, I was in a three way battle with Luke Hill and Ben Griffiths going into the final round of the Expert 125 championship in the Remedies series. I knew I had to better them two on the day and in the end I succeeded but it was close all day.
• In 2006 I was riding in the Under 21s championship at Frome in my second ever attempt in the series, and I managed to get two good starts and had two good results which were 6th and 7th. I was really pleased with this as it exceeded my expectations.
• Also in 2006, I was racing at Torrington in the Under 21’s Championship and I managed to holeshot one of the races and was leading the race for 4 laps until a rear puncture hampered my chances and I ended up finishing in 11th. Although I was gutted about the puncture I was happy with the way things were going before it happened.”

MOTO: If you could go play riding with any rider and on any circuit which and who would it be?
“It would have to be Stefan Everts on the legendary circuit of Namur.”
