HIGH FIVES - Daniel Preston

April 23, 2008

The British under21 championship is one of the most competitive series in the UK, packed full of talent and future stars, one rider who has come on leaps and bounds this year is Daniel Preston. Stuart Cawse caught up with the young Welshman for a HIGH FIVES gossip.

MOTO: You’re currently lying 4th in the Under 21 championship after posting some impressive results in the opening two rounds, you’re also beating a handful of Maxxis regulars but you’ve taken the decision not to ride the Maxxis series this year, can you explain why this is and when will we be likely to see you competing in the Maxxis?

“I’ve basically decided to build my confidence and speed up before I compete in a full season of the Maxxis, I shall take part in the Under 21 championship this year and do the whole Maxxis series next year.”

MOTO: Last season was very successful for you because you won the Remedies Bar Expert 125 championship, as well as gaining a overall position of sixth in the under 21 class, did you expect to be as successful as that and has that made you more motivated this year to emulate last year results?

“Last year I set my self two goals which were to finish top ten overall in the Under 21s and to win the Remedies Bar Experts class. I succeeded both goals by finishing sixth overall in the Under 21’s and by winning the Remedies Expert class. I feel due to last years success it has made me more confident this year and I have set two goals which is to defend my Remedies title and to finish in the top three of the 21’s I think it will be hard work because I’m running a complete standard bike but the season has started well and I‘m eagerly anticipating the rest of the season.”

MOTO: Due to you competing in the South West Remedies Bar Championship for a couple of years now, everyone involved in the series is aware of your riding speed a fluency, but now you have been placing well at the Under 21s there are several people who are certainly taken notice of your capabilities. Do you feel that not having the additional pressure of being expected to deliver has helped you going into these meetings?

“Yes defiantly. I feel the set up I have at the moment has helped me because we keep our selves to our selves which makes it a much more relaxing environment.”

MOTO: You’re based in Wales but choose to ride the Remedies Bar championship, can you explain your reason behind this and what do you think of the series?

“There’s not really many series round by were I live except local meetings. The Remedies Bar Championship is the closest series to us, apart from the Rhayader evening series but due to work commitments I am unable to take part in it. I really enjoy the Remedies series for many reasons, but the main two would be I like the tracks within the series and the fact it is very competitive.”

MOTO: Can you explain your current situation regarding your machine set up etc?

“I’m running a complete standard bike this season, with some help from Motomanix which supplies me with some racing kit. The rest of the setup is down to me and my parents. In the future I’d like to get into a team but find no one gives out anything for nothing.”
