Bikes worth £25,000 stolen from garage

February 26, 2008

Rising stars of motocross suffered a major setback to their national campaign when six of their bikes – worth up to £25,000 – were stolen from a Northamptonshire village.

Burglars broke into Robert Gilbert's family home in Blacksmithy's Lane, Little Brington, on Friday night, while his children and friends were sleeping in the lounge.

They took six motocross bikes, helmets and boots belonging to his children, an Audi Q7, a laptop computer, two iPods and a mobile phone.

The family recently returned from America, where Henry, 12, and Charlie, 10, were practising ahead of the national season, which starts in March 16.

But their hopes of competing have now been dashed, unless the bikes can be found.

Mr Gilbert said: "Some of the bikes are sponsored by Yamaha and Henry is absolutely gutted. Imagine a 12-year-old; he doesn't want to go to school.

"We had six children, because my kids had friends sleeping over, and no one heard a thing. None of the neighbours heard a thing.

"It was very professional. They walked into the house, disconnected the garage and, as a bonus, got my car.

"Four of the bikes were brand new. They were supposed to be practising on Sunday in Weedon."

The six customised bikes included three Yamaha YZ85s, a Honda CRF150, a Yamaha TTR90 and a Honda CR50, which is the only one of its kind and has no front brakes.

Police confirmed they were investigating the burglary and had already found Mr Gilbert's Audi car in a hotel car park.
