Good news for Brampton

December 17, 2007

FARMLAND near Brampton is set to continue to play host to top-level motocross. But residents living close to the site want to ensure that no more than 10 meetings are held each year.

The East Cumbria Motor Cycle Club’s permission to use land at Low Gelt Bridge Farm runs out at the end of the year, an application to extend that period has now been lodged with Carlisle City Council’s planning department.

But officers have already received two letters which have asked them to restrict motocross meetings at the site, which adjoins Gelt Woods, to 10 each year.

One woman, who lives at Townhead, says: “I would like to reinforce the fact that the motocross events are noisy and intrusive to local residents and those walking in Gelt Woods.

“There is an influx of young men who seem to think they can ride their motorbikes off road anywhere in the neighbourhood, without thought of trespass or consideration for other people.

“With these thoughts in mind, please do not extend the permission for extra days should that arise now or in the future.”

A couple who live on the other side of the A69 say they have no objections to the planning applications so long as there are no extra racing days.

The writer says: “When I hear the bikes and the PA system, I think there are many young riders enjoying themselves and learning skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. In many cases their families are involved too and that’s a good thing.

“At the end of the day, the motors are switched off and things are back to normal soon enough.

“Cumbria has an appalling road accident record and I believe that nearly all of these accidents are a result of a lack of skill, not necessarily speeding.

“Drivers and riders who don’t understand the changing dynamics of their vehicle under different conditions are likely to discover their limitations the hard way.

“Handling skills such as these are learned and honed during this sort of competition.”

The city council expects to have made a decision on the application by the second week of the new year.
