Caithness Motocross Club - No fun in the mud at Ravenshill

June 25, 2008

HEAVY showers did little to dampen the spirits of the riders who turned out for round two of the 2008 Caithness Motocross Club championship at the Ravenshill venue.

Seven classes raced during the day on the smaller auto class track and on the much larger main track. The event was sponsored by Angus Gordon Plant Hire from Lairg with trophies given out to the top three riders in each class.

The auto quad class started the day off with Jack Duffy and Ben Mackenzie battling it out on the evenly-matched quads. After race two they both had a win each so it came down to race three for the decider and it was Jack that narrowly took the race and overall win on the day.

The 50cc auto bike class had three riders and like the quads they also produced some very tight racing. Newcomer Alan Gunn did very well taking two second places and a first place on his first visit to the club. Jak Murray improved all day long in the greasy conditions. The overall win went to a very quick Liam Mackay.

The first race of the day on the main track was the 65cc class. If there was any doubt about these lads' abilities on the main track it was quickly dismissed after the first race.

They all handled the conditions very well and showed no sign of difficulty getting around. The overall win on the day went to Ewan Gordon with Tom Mackenzie and newcomer Lachlan Jardine-Munro taking third place.

Next up was the 85cc. Five riders took to the line and after the first corner it was Jake Anderson and Kyle Angus out in front. After a couple of laps of exchanging the lead a mechanical failure with Kyle's bike halted what was shaping up to be a good tussle. Jake went on to win all three races and Kyle finished the day on a borrowed bike.

Lewis O'Brien and Rikki Cormack chased each other all day but a puncture and broken chain finished Rikki's day after race two. Morgan Robertson competed against the big-wheel machines on his small-wheel version and held his own very well, most notable was his good performance over the jumps.

Martin Kirk was the only entry in the 125cc class so he raced against the adult riders and did very well on a track that is possibly better suited to the more powerful machines.

As usual, the adults gave a great display of speed and jumping skills throughout the day and at the front in each race was Kyle Mackie and an in-form Iain Nicolson. With a win each after race two it came down to the final race for the victor to be decided. After the lead changed several times, Iain went out in front and was pulling out a decent distance until he parted company with the bike after coming off a jump.

This allowed Kyle to regain the lead and take the overall on the day. Ryan Sinclair did well in this class and a gearbox failure put Kyle Thomson out of contention early in the day.
