It all ends in tears for Smith at Desertmartin but in a good way

June 23, 2008

There’s no two ways about it when it comes to organising their British championship round at Desertmartin the Cookstown Club are second to none.

When the MOTO team arrived on Saturday the circuit looked like a picture postcard, banners lined the track which made it look so colourful and with a few minor tweaks to the circuit, round five of the Maxxis British championship was looking like being a classic.

As you know the weather can be so unpredictable and Saturday night was no exception as the heavens opened up and the track was soaked but it did need watering so it wasn’t that bad, unfortunately the rain came and went throughout Sunday and kept the crowds away which must have been heartbreaking for the hardworking team who have worked their nuts off producing a circuit of this quality.

No Billy Mackenzie so this opened up the MX1 class for a new overall winner, Ray Rowson stepped up to the mark in moto one and ripped to a thirteen second win from Pioneer Yamaha rider Wayne Smith who looked to have a new lease of life, Ray looked so strong and never looked like floundering at the last hurdle. James Noble, Tom Church and Mark Jones rounded off the top five in a race which didn’t quite live up to its pre-race predictions.

It was Smith who decided that he wanted the taste of glory in moto two and led from start till finish and produced his first ever British championship overall win – believe me there were tears from all around him as he said,” this is what I’ve worked for all my career”, it was a great moment for Wayne and his team.

Noble did enough to stay ahead of battling Brad Anderson in moto two, Brad certainly never gave up the chase and tried his utmost to catch the Whitby based rider. Mark Jones put another consistent ride for fourth and race one winner Ray Rowson finished in fifth.

The results did make a slight dent into Mackenzie’s lead but the boys will have to win a few more races to stand a chance of taking the lead in the overall MX1 championship.
