SOME LIKE IT HOT

May 12, 2008

As the already hot early morning sun beat down onto a perfectly groomed Mildenhall the excellent field of Auto’s lined up for the first of their 4 races of the full track today as round one of the KP Equipe – ISO2 Auto Challenge got underway.

Pleased as punch

As the day unfolded it became apparent that any of the top three riders: Ben Kind, Harry Wichman or Dylan Woodcock could come out the winner as they all had a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd place result to their credit going into the last race of the day. Harry had a commanding lead over Dylan and a poor starting Ben but Ben dug deep and gradually reeled in first Dylan and then Harry who, on the last lap, succumbed to the pressure and dropped it in the deep sand allowing Ben to make the pass to take the win, the overall for the day and the honour of the number one plate going into round two. Meanwhile Dylan was past Harry for 2nd while a despondent Harry came home in 3rd for 2nd overall by just one point.

The Adult overs were second group out and Pete Gilder took the overall with a good first race win followed up by a 2nd and 5th. Both Simon Steadman and Greg O’Callaghan also shared a win and a 2nd a piece but Greg’s more costly error in the first race pushed him into 3rd overall behind Simon.

A nearly full gate of Big Wheels came next and Glenn Fletcher looked unbeatable after his convincing first race gate to flag victory but as the track cut up Daley Cauldron’s consistency paid off and with a 2nd, 1st, 3rd on his scorecard he took the overall from Harry Bradley who won the last race and Ali Meadows who was just off the pace of the race winners but made few mistakes for a solid 3rd overall.

The Adult unders was won convincingly with a maximum by Gavin Foulston, although he had to work for it and but for a bike failure for rider 189 in race two when in a clear lead on the last lap his maximum wouldn’t have happened!
Behind him Richie McDermot battled hard all day and deservedly came out in 2nd overall a couple of points clear of Ben Howard in 3rd.

Joe Collier and Lewis Holland had a cracking day battling with each other in the Small Wheels and Matt Wilde was also in the mix – especially in the last race, but Joe came out on top by just one point thanks to 2 wins ahead of Lewis and Matt.

It was good to see an improved number of 65 pilots this week as this year this has been the only class the club has struggled with for numbers – hopefully a good sign for the future. Greg Hyett was in sparkling form and he took the only other maximum of the day and was well clear of the chasing pack in all three races. Callum Heasman and Sam Morgan bashed bars all day and swapped places on more than one occasion but Sam was beaten into 3rd overall by Callum in the last race as he took 2nd spot in that race.
Damien Wales came out on top of the pile in the Schoolboy 125’s with two stylish wins and a 3rd in the 2nd block. Sporting his Cairoli 222 look alike kit and machine he styled it up big time over many of the jumps much to the crowd’s amusement!
Harry McKenna rode well all day and his two 2nd place results were enough to secure him 2nd overall ahead of David Sweet who looked smooth and steady but not on the same pace as the two ahead of him.

Surprise of the day was Tom Barley who did nothing in the first and last races but leaped out the gate in race two like a scolded cat, gaped the pack and romped home for an easy win! What was that all about Tom?

The club moves onto Long Buckby on the 25th May for round 7 and look forward to seeing you all there.
