January 06, 2008
Market Drayton Motocross Club celebrated a highly successful debut year at a presentation evening held at the Hodnet Social Club.
Formed in October of 2006 by just 10 people as part of the Amateur Motor Cycling Association, the club has grown to over 60 strong in 12 months.
Four meetings were held at a new track at Ollerton, near Childs Ercall, with over 250 riders attending each race day.
Weekly meetings were also held at the Hodnet Club and there was a special round of applause at the presentations event for behind-the-scenes stalwarts Dave Clemmett, Mick Mullinder, Dave Bajic and Matt and Nathan Shore.
But perhaps the most popular prize presentation of the evening was to Geoff Wise, voted the riders’ rider by his clubmates.
Club chairman Nathan Shore said that although Geoff might not be the fastest rider in the club, he had won respect and admiration as an all–rounder, offering advice, help, dedication and above all, a great sense of humour, to everyone.
Tom Parry, described as a quiet and focused rider with great natural ability, collected the award for being the best inter-junior.
The Under-18 award went to Fred Wilson, another talented youngsters with great potential.
John Cartwright, the vice- chairman and a core member of the club, topped the junior class.
“He gives the club 100 per cent... we would not be here without him,” said club chairman Shore. Matt Shore, the club secretary is said to live and breath motocross, riding out in all weathers, was the best senior.
Simon Higgins, who is the club’s race secretary, used his years of experience to win the best expert award. Bouquets were also presented to Jane Brown, Carol Wise, Penny Cartwright, Nicky Brundell and Tina Pharo for their help and support setting up and helping to run the club’s race meetings.
